Mill

The Mill at Bere Mill is a fine example of an 18c. water mill used first to make paper in the buildings surrounding the wheel and then to process Bere: a type of Barley from which the name of the house comes.

But it is as a paper mill that Bere Mill is famous, for it was here that Henri Portal made the first watermarked paper for the Bank of England: a contract his company still maintains today some 300 years later!

Today the wheel is not in use though it has been maintained by the Hampshire Mills Group and until the heat exchange system was put in the river in 2014, it was still capable of generating sufficient electricity to heat the house.
