The valley sides are cut out of the chalk upland and have a thin sward typical of chalk uplands.

cropped-water2.jpgBere Mill Farm sits either side of the upper River Test.  The valley bottom was worked as water meadows from the 17th to the late 19th century and still provides rich summer grazing, as well as the hay on which the stock are fed in winter.
